‘Avengers 5’ Touting Shawn Levy To Direct

The main cast of The Avengers in the battle of new york

Following Destin Daniel Cretton’s exit as director of Avengers 5 last year, Marvel is currently searching for a new filmmaker to take on the project as Michael Waldron continues to polish his script. A report by Deadline last week that was flagged as a hot rumor, but later backed up by other major trades, suggested that Marvel Studios’ top choice for the gig is Shawn Levy, director of the forthcoming Deadpool & Wolverine.

The Hollywood Reporter also added that Levy was offered the job a few months ago, but declined due to scheduling concerns. The studio is now trying again, whether it’s because they think there might be an opening for him, or because they just want to give it another chance before searching for another person, or another reason. It seems like he has the latest script by Waldron on his desk, and could make a decision soon.

The project is in the early stages of prep, but it’s already shaping up to be quite massive. According to Deadline, the project could bring back up to 60 cast members of past Marvel movies, with reporter Jeff Sneider raising that number to 65. Remember the days when Scarlett Johansson said that there was a scene in Avengers: Infinity War with 30 Marvel characters? Well, it looks like they’re trying to top it now.

Marvel’s ambitious plan is to start shooting Avengers 5, previously labeled The Kang Dynasty. The pic currently holds a May 2026 release date, but that’s probably unrealistic at this point. Infinity War started filming in January 2017 for a May 2018 release, but that was such a different era, where the pipelines of visual effects weren’t as filled up as they are now. Marvel must be courting actors and asking them to reserve some time in their 2025 schedule to shoot the film.

The other problem they might run into is the fact that the whole storyline has changed a lot ever since the movie was announced, and they might not have had the necessary time to pivot before the big finale. Deadpool & Wolverine is supposed to act as a preamble to the climactic Avengers movies, so we might know more once that gets released.

There is still a sixth Avengers movie, Secret Wars, that would come out later. The original plan was to have a six-month gap between the two; now there’s a full calendar year between their release dates. We don’t know if Marvel will be looking for another director for Secret Wars, or if they’d like Levy to do both.
